Carpet Cleaning the Method or the Man

The ongoing debate, about which Carpet Cleaning method is best, is at a stand still.  Some service pros and customers alike live and breathe one way of cleaning carpet.  From the pro perspective, we always are most partial to our first love, the first method used effectively.  From the customers view point it is an issue of before and after, before my carpet was dirty and now it is clean.

However, each of these opinions considered is not based on the factors that get carpet clean.  If every Technician and every customer understood how and why carpeting is restored, then the low perceptions of the Carpet Cleaning Industry could be raised.  This tweaking of public perceptions will reduce the anxiety of selecting a carpet cleaning pro.  One company's slogan is, 'An educated consumer is our best customer'.  So educate we shall.

The query over which carpet cleaning method is better many times does not take into count the most important variable, the Technician.  The technician has the power to make or break a carpet cleaning experience, through his attitude, skill level and employment status.

The attitude is obvious, but must be mentioned, there are many that consider a customer to be a distraction.  The common courtesy of a smile, a handshake and a warm greeting will never be too much to ask for.  The skill level of the technician is another major influence on service.  Does the technician know about fiber types, carpet construction, or adequate PH levels for cleaning?

Finally, the employment status is a key determiner that is seldom examined.  Technicians come in three primary classifications: Owner/Operators, Employees or Independent Contractors.   Theses are listed in the order of preference.  The owner/operators are individuals that rely on craftsmanship and word of mouth referrals; this information good or bad affects them directly.

The second classification is employee.  Some of the best carpets cleaning technicians are classified in this way and some of the worst.  An employee has the company's reputation to fall upon should problems arise.

The last type of carpet cleaning technician is the independent contractor, most are commission only and their livelihood is dependant exclusively on sales.  This type of technician in stronger terms, must sell in order to provide for his/her family.  This in many cases is the scenario that produces the dreaded 'high pressure sales tactics'.

It is not the Method, not the Machine, but he the Man that get you carpet cleaning.
